Built to Last: Tile Selection

May 16, 2025

Tile choice affects both the function and feel of a space, and years of experience with these materials have given our builders a deep knowledge of several tiles and their properties. At TreHus, a few varieties of tile stand out for their unique character and timeless appeal, including the classic warmth of ceramic, the glossy sheen of zellige, the elegance of marble, and the intricate details of mosaic. Here’s a closer look at what sets these tiles apart.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile is our tried and true; a timeless, durable, classic material. Suitable for almost every area in the home, ceramic tiles are often featured in bathrooms, entryways, and kitchens, such as this charming incorporation of a textured white ceramic tile backsplash in the Mid-Century Dala Kitchen.

Zellige Tile

Zellige tile is a handcrafted, high gloss, natural clay tile from Morocco. This perfectly imperfect artisan tile is ideal for lower-traffic areas, such as fireplace surrounds, tile accents, or backsplashes, as its uneven surface may feel rough as flooring. The Minneapolis Golden Hour Addition features a dazzling zellige tile powder room backsplash.

Marble Tile

Although this material is more delicate than ceramic or granite, marble’s unique patterns of veins and hues add a sophisticated air to any space. Perfect for elegant accents or backsplashes, marble can also repel water and be used in bathrooms when properly sealed, such as in the Traditional Bathroom Revival.

Mosaic Tile

Mosaic-style tiles are often made of ceramic, natural stone, glass, or porcelain, creating an intricate larger pattern made of small individual tile pieces. Mosaic tiles can add color and depth to any space, but are particularly well suited for shower wall accents and bathroom or kitchen backsplashes, such as the emerald green backsplash in Park Avenue Penthouse.
